Whether you are following the Premier League or not, there is still an increasing scoring trend going on. What is more, not only there are more goals scored, but there are also more late goals scored in the Premier League right now. While there are more than a dozen goals scored after the 76th minute at this point, the average goals per game are currently at 3.63. This number suggests if the trend continues throughout the season, we are going to witness the most goals ever scored in a single season.

Sports Betting Guide: When are the most goals scored in football?

So, what is the reason behind such an interesting trend? Like we have mentioned above, the league is on a course to have the record scoring season, which is going to beat the previous record set during the inaugural season back when the league had 82 more games and the higher number of teams (22 as opposed to 20 right now). Well, one of the main reasons for having more goals is the fact that matches started lasting longer. So far, there were a couple of matches that have lasted for over 100 minutes, pushing the average length of the match per gameweek to the following numbers (rounded to the closest minute):

  • Week 1 - 97 minutes
  • Week 2 - 98 minutes
  • Week 3 - 98 minutes
  • Week 4 - 97 minutes

So far, there were 5 matches lasting 100 or more minutes

  • 103 minutes: Brighton 2-3 Man United
  • 103 minutes: Tottenham 1-1 Newcastle
  • 102 minutes: Man United 1-3 Crystal Palace
  • 100 minutes: Newcastle 0-3 Brighton
  • 100 minutes: Crystal Palace 1-2 Everton

The average match length is currently sitting between 97-98 minutes. Such information is quite crucial for punters who are looking for goals or when are they scored when trying to beat online bookmakers. Not only there are more goals scored, but the number of awarded & scored penalties has also gone up because of VAR checks at the end of matches. Week 4, for example, saw 3/4 penalties being scored during the 76-FT period. Leicester has been the team that benefited the most from this statistics so far, scoring 5/12 goals from the spot.

Since the number of goals went up, traditional Over 2.5 goals bettors had a chance to catch tons of value. Just check this out:

Over 2.5 matches per week

  • Week 1 - 4/8
  • Week 2 - 8/10
  • Week 3 - 7/10
  • Week 4 - 7/10

Over 3.5 goals markets have also proved to carry a decent value, including at least 50% of matches with at least 4 goals (excluding the opening matchweek).

Over 3.5 matches per week

  • Week 1 - 2/8
  • Week 2 - 6/10
  • Week 3 - 5/10
  • Week 4 - 5/10

This statistics gets even more interesting if you look a bit further. Each matchweek not only saw lots of matches with at least 3 or 4 goals but the number of teams recording Over 2.5 goals themselves is quite impressive as well.

Over 2.5 per team per week

  • Week 1 - 5/16
  • Week 2 - 8/20
  • Week 3 - 7/20
  • Week 4 - 6/20

As for the Over 3.5 goals, such a goal-fest has been seen on fewer occasions.

Over 3.5 per team per week

  • Week 1 - 1/16
  • Week 2 - 4/20
  • Week 3 - 2/20
  • Week 4 - 4/20
